How to polish brass?

The first thing you need to do is to be sure if the object is made of brass or is only brass plated, ie only have a thin layer of brass on another metal.

One tip is to test with a regular refrigerator magnet to keep track of it, as brass is not magnetic. Hold the magnet against the object. Should the magnet get stuck, you need to be extra careful. Avoid rubbing too hard and use things that do not scratch the coating.
